Investigations on identity and community are at the heart of the stories we tell at British Journal of Photography. With this issue, we consider these subjects in relation to the theme of tradition. Through the lenses of global photographers, we learn how customs are upheld and changed and explore whether they are still relevant today.

Our main feature section includes the work of Guatemalan documentary photographer Juan Brenner, who explores tradition in relation to today’s youth in his homeland, and whose image graces this edition’s cover. Alys Tomlinson shares her latest portrait series of Italian villagers from Sicily, Sardinia and the Venetian Lagoon. And, Native American Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star is in conversation with Raquel Villar Pérez about her new monograph, Delegation. We speak to Baldwin Lee, a largely unknown photographer who shines an honest light on the hardships endured by the people of the American South in the 80s and still today. There are also special features on the new Barbican show chronicling the late, rallying feminist Carolee Schneeman’s oeuvre and a revisit of Larry Towell’s series, The Mennonites. Turkey’s photography scene is in focus, guided by the expertise of local writer and curator Merve Arkunlar.
