RIPS is a collaborative project between Archie Davidson, a photographer and design student based in Manchester and Ripley Townsend literature graduate and poet based in Gloucester.
Over the past three years the cousins have been in a conversation sharing pages from each other’s sketchbooks, responding to one another’s poems and photographic collages with no particular goal. The exercise granted the other a look into their thought process and soon, naturally photographs were paired with poems, poems were created in response to collages and visa-versa.
Photographic collages were made as part of Archie’s personal practice, exploring how photos can be extended past their initial intrigue by enhancing emotions or narratives within them. Ripley’s poetry has a wide ranging subject matter but shares “common themes of kinship, nostalgia, and the passage of time.” Adjoining illustrations clarify associations between the photographic and poetic.
