Morphogenesis (a series of two publications) is a collaborative project that imagines the plant life of earth’s distant future by reaching back to ideas first proposed in Scottish biologist and mathematician D’Arcy Wentworth Thompson’s 1917 book On Growth and Form. Thompson argued that mathematics could be used to understand the processes of cell biology, and his ideas - which still have relevance today - were the starting point for the digital transformations used to create speculative plant forms. A selection of these altered images were then subjected to further changes using generative AI and prompts taken from Thompson’s text. Thematically, the work speculates on how human-generated existential threats like climate change and artificial intelligence will drive new, emergent organisms that evolve in ways that we cannot know or predict.
