After noticing her in the crowd at the Greenwich Village Halloween parade, Valerie Philips befriended Monkia, a Polish-American college student. This is the second book of photographs to grow out of the relationship as Philips photographs Monika at home in Brooklyn, in her dorm room, at her job as a hotel lifeguard, at Coney Island and other locations. The settings and situations impart a degree of generic banality as Monika poses in her swimsuit or with ice cream, yet Philips conveys a refreshing intimacy with her subject as Monika’s candid presence feels simultaneously innocent and worldly, wholesome and lusty.
