Laurence Kubski spent weeks in china to make this project about a thousand-year-old tradition of raising pet crickets to hear them sing or see them fight.
Starting in the largest insect market in Shanghai She followed cricket hunters in the shadows of remote cornfields in Shandong Province and met mafia members buying millions of yuans’ worth of crickets for illegal fighting. Immersing herself in this tradition, she learned the symbolism of flowers in traditional Chinese painting to compose her still life photographs.
