Creative Review Spring 2024, The Future Issue

Publisher notes:

Welcome to our Spring edition, where we are fixing our gaze on the future and considering what creatives and designers need to be thinking about in 2024.

This year there is no grand new tech plan on the horizon, just the continuation of a few that have taken root in the past few years. One of these, of course, is artificial intelligence, which continues to generate inspiration and concern in equal measure among creatives, depending on who you talk to.

Both sides of that coin can be found in this issue of the mag. We talk to artist and photographer Charlie Engman, who has provided the cover image this time, about his experiments using Al to supplement his work, leading to a series of bizarre and intriguing images. Elsewhere, though, lain Tait, co-founder of creative studio Food, discusses his fears about creatives not having a seat at the table for Al's development and asks, "How can we not fuck this up like we did the internet?"

In an interview with immersive art star Refik Anadol, we explore how technology is infiltrating the art world. Plus we also consider what is next for augmented reality. The future is not all about technology, though. In an article that responds to the many recent mergers and name changes in advertising and design lately, we consider what legacy means in an industry that is focused on creating fame for its brands and clients rather than for itself.

And for those of you who might have only just got your head around how best to communicate with Gen Z, l'm afraid there is a whole new generation already lurching into view: Gen Alpha. We look at what brands need to think about when trying to engage with this youthful audience.

Finally, I'd like to finish this letter by looking backwards for a moment and bidding a fond farewell to our art director Paul Pensom, who completed his last issue with us in Winter 2023. Paul defined Creative Review's look for well over a decade and I'd like to thank him on behalf of the whole team for all his hard work and elegant design choices. I'd also like to welcome our new designer, Lex Guerra, who joins us from this issue.
