Chaos Rule Us by Susu Laroche

Guided by an obsession with process and experimentation, LaRoche’s aesthetic is a  hand navigating the heart of her work. All relation to the here and now disintegrates as images cleave onto fragments of reality, mythic figures overwhelm comprehension, landscapes dissolve into unknown worlds and yet everything still circles around a monolithic presence at the centre of each work. But what is this presence? And where is this centre?

Even when there are no human figures to be seen this presence is felt throughout each image. The landscapes appear to be dominated by traces of something else, something out of reach, something beyond; a staircase or a building, an archway or even some debris left to weather. And it is through this disorientation that traces remain only to haunt the book like ghosts; landscapes of alternate realities as fleeting fragments of something slipping away and memories in an attic of lives once lived, lives not yet lived or lives yet to be lived.

Split into three sections, the book charts moments of LaRoche’s life and the different circumstances that dictated her approach to her work from 2008-2020. A timelessness evokes  tangents of alterity throughout each of the three sections, where the first and final section experimenting with landscape and natural form circles around the central chapter of intimate portraits in an attic. Chaos Rules Us marks the second offering from Wrong Eye showing an intimate insight into LaRoche’s art and the continuation of Wrong Eye’s curatorial finesse.
