The Portrait Issue

The cover image of our annual portrait issue, Mickalene Thomas’ ‘Clarivel with Orange Earring’, is an archetypal example of Thomas’ ability to combine the archival with the new – and in doing so, to challenge perceptions and confront complex histories.

In our cover feature, a wide-ranging interview with former editor-in-chief of FOAM Magazine Elisa Medde, the artist discusses re-envisioning photographic portraiture, the importance of mentoring, and the case for a wider reimagining of society.

“Oftentimes, and particularly in America, we want to compartmentalise the notion of what the Black body is, ignoring the diaspora of how Black bodies have moved through the world and what those relationships were and are now,” Thomas tells Medde, reflecting on her latest series, ‘je t’adore’. “I think the notion of body positivity comes through some of these archival images… There’s a power in these images and I’m so grateful for them.”
