AUGURY by Daniel Rampulla explores the subjective truth of photography. This new series acts as a year diary in Rampulla’s life and delves into the art of constructing alternative memories. Unravelling decisive moments rather than reducing them to a single photograph, Rampulla weaves together fragmented parts, revealing a new reality that defies the limitations of photographic memory. The book shows images photographed between New York, California and Bologna in Italy, organised in a way that conveys the fleeting sensation of flashing souvenirs that arise in one’s mind, unconstrained by chronological order.

With AUGURY, Daniel made a departure from his usual approach to photography by exchanging tools forcing him to work spontaneously and let go of control. With this series, Rampulla also pushed the boundaries of film, experimenting with unexpected frame juxtapositions, heavy cropping and overlaps, creating an honest and diverse collection of images. AUGURY is accompanied by a written response by American writer and poet Kyle Dacuyan.

Daniel Rampulla is a Brooklyn-based photographer born in San Francisco. He works with a variety of cameras to capture the people, landscapes and animals close to him. Rampulla’s photographs and the subjects in them are both stand-ins of subconscious memories and bookmarks for future ones. Sometimes he photographs to experience the present, and other times to remember the past.
