In November and December of 1991, nearly a year before its closure in October 1992, I took the train from Kingston to Montego Bay. At the time, I had no idea that my rail adventure was capturing a vanishing way of life, when once-isolated communities in Jamaica’s remote areas were connected by train. In recent years, the Jamaica Railway Corporation has revived small sections of the line for tourism, national holidays, and local services, with plans for further expansion. Until then, these photographs are dedicated to those who cherish memories of traveling by train from Kingston to Montego Bay, to the daydreamers of travel, and to the enduring power of trains to transport us to another world.

Kingston To Montego Bay by train. Jamaica. 1991.
