Zoltán Jókay's portraits probe the nuances of happiness and alienation with tremendous psychological and emotional depth.

There is nothing "cool" or distant about Zoltán Jókay's portraits. Although this may seem anachronistic, it may be the reason for their unique appeal. For his works always revolve around intimacy, closeness, the sense of being touched, both literally and figuratively. Zoltán Jókay's pictures are self-images. He uses photography as a language, a tool with which to approach his own biography, to understand it, and to protect himself against it. The son of Hungarian immigrants, Jókay grew up on the outskirts of Munich. In the early 1990s, he attracted attention with a series of portraits concerned with childhood as a period of vulnerability and loneliness, works that may also be seen as reflections on his own childhood experience.
