Lisette Model conceived of photography as a job, not a mission. She made New York City, the American Dream, and its underprivileged the object of her sharp and unflinching gaze. Her way of subordinating the medium and technique to the point of view is one of her defining characteristics, while her dual career as a creator and teacher influenced an entire generation of young photographers. "Shoot from the gut," Model always said.
