This book is not an artist monograph on Giovanna Silva, it is a book about Giovanna Silva.
A book which meets the artist in its compulsive actions – an equivalent resonant expression of Giovanna’s voracious and abounding nature. Providing clarity through abundance, the book encourages slow focus in a world that increasingly demands instant gratification, presenting hundreds of photographs of market stall collections, taken by Giovanna over five years and across ten cities.
During a three-day workshop, one thousand four hundred and twenty-two photographic prints are edited by Giovanna Silva and OK-RM (Oliver Knight and Rory McGrath). They are laid out across the studio, distilled into collections according to pictorial correlations and associations, compulsively arranged and re-arranged, setting the stage for these newly formed relationships to develop into new compositions. This compulsive act of editing is documented by photographer Thomas Adank as an active and live component of the work.
Designed by OK-RM, Compulsion...Composition is as much about the process of making a book as it is about the photographs themselves. Conceived and realised as a social and engaged action, the process of editing has stepped out from behind the curtain and lays bare Giovanna’s insatiable desire to explore in order to find the familiar.
