Mumbai’s politicians have an insatiable appetite for visibility. Their faces appear on banners, hoardings and walls, only to be replaced by another face, another birthday, another festival, another claim to public space.
Afterlife began with Ritesh Uttamchandani's compulsive photographing of these chamcha hoardings and grew into a book about their production, proliferation, disappearance and reuse. The photographs bleed into one another, fragment and collide, much like the banners that crowd Mumbai’s streets.
Printed on glossy paper reminiscent of party manifestos and bound beneath a cover made from salvaged hoarding material, Afterlife gives permanence to images whose life goal is to disappear.
