The Swamp is a collection of images gathered by artist Sofia Borges during  countless visits to natural history museums, zoos, aquariums and research centres  over a period of seven years, where the artifice of reality became her point of focus. Borges explores the comical absurdity of the habitat diorama, in which the taxidermy object is tasked with representing its living self. A motionless walrus glaring out from its plastic Antarctic locale is no longer the thing itself, but an image of an image.

Beyond the living-dead museological spectacles, The Swamp also aims to tackle the notion that images can be "read". The spine of the book reads:  “Reality as mud as dense as air” in bold letters, and this aptly reflects the tone of the book itself. The images are leaden with layer upon layer of subtext forming an impenetrable barrier to comprehension. Seemingly random sequences of images are presented alongside text inspired by the insoluble language of Beckett, the aim of which is to disrupt logical processing in a manner reminiscent of the cinematic mind-twists of David Lynch.

“What I seek are images, which, in their very artifice, are able to present themselves as a problem” - Borges herself puts it. And it is true that the monstrous forms and coarse surfaces seem to ooze from the pages and purposefully assault the senses. Nevertheless The Swamp is as fascinating as it is unfathomable.
