Skid Row is an area of downtown Los Angeles known for having one of the one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States. Over decades the area has undergone countless regeneration and rehabilitation projects. Currently the district is home to some 15,000 current and former homeless people.

Dutch photographer Désirée van Hoek has been documenting the residents of Skid Row from 2007 to 2015. Being a former fashion photographer, her focus is on people’s dwellings, possessions, and clothes. The resulting photographs form a compassionate and intimate portrait of a neighbourhood undergoing rapid change, yet retaining a strong sense of its own identity. Hoek's beautiful self-published book is not a story of people surviving under difficult circumstances, but the people of a strong community living their lives.
