Movement offers an unprecedented view of the emergence of rap and hip hop in Paris and its environs from ‘84 to ‘89.There are stories that become legends. And there are those that have yet to be told. Such is the case with the evolution of rap and graffiti in France. Between 1984 and 1989, what was known as Mouvement exploded. Before we knew it as hip hop, youth from the down and out quarters of Paris and its suburbs grabbed hold of these new forms and carried them to recognition and glory.

“Movement. From a wasteland to the dance floor” offers a unique view of this relatively undocumented phenomenon. Unseen photos from the era, captured by young, newly arrived Japanese photographer Yoshi Omori, and texts by the movement’s key players, Jay One Ramier and Marc Boudet, relive the emergence of the artistic practices cultivated by a hungry, free, and creative youth.
