Ever since the pioneers made their first perilous journeys across the American frontier, California has attracted people in their droves, whether seeking fame and fortune or something less tangible. From the Gold Rush to the Silver Screen, the city of Los Angeles has always represented the hope of making the the impossible possible. Though visions of sun-drenched hollywood starlets and rollerbladers along Venice Beach have been somewhat ruptured in past decades by tensions of poverty and racial division, the city has undergone significant renovation and reinvigoration in recent years. Former ganglands are now home to new emerging creative neighbourhoods, causing an electric fusion of cultures. This development is many ways very typical of LA, where the pressure to succeed contends with the desire for easy living, and people of different cultural backgrounds jostle for their own interpretation of the American Dream. Despite, or possibly because of these tensions, the West Coast metropolis remains at the forefront of cuisine, music and the arts.

LOST iN talks with the people who are helping to shape the city’s identity: a hip-hop legend and music producer, a filmmaker and actress, a fashion designer and artist couple, a food expert and a beach-side family. Each share their recommendations for places to eat, drink, shop and stay; Including seafood and cocktails for Bond villains, a nightclub under a carpark, Mexican food at a family table, a cave graffitied by Jim Morrison, modernist villas on the lake, a secret speakeasy in Santa Monica and more. The recommendations are complemented by a photo essay by George Byrne and stories from local and global creatives to help you get lost in Los Angeles.
