For her latest project Children of Graceland, Hayley Louisa Brown, editor-in-chief of BRICK magazine, visited Elvis Presley’s hometown where she photographed young Elvis fans, as a way of exploring his contemporary legacy and the idea of Elvis as a legend, rather than the man himself.

The idea of photographing young Elvis fans came from my curiosity regarding the longevity of Elvis’s legacy. , about wWho was replacing a fan-base that was, as morbid as it sounds, dying out? .

After a few weeks spent at Graceland, hearing his back catalogue playing over the speakers on a loop, it begins to wear thin.  You start to sympathise with the young adults who work there, wearing Elvis T-shirts as a uniform. Most of them don’t love Elvis. But the fans, they flock. Hordes of aging men with their thin hair dyed an aggressive black, and women with bedazzled t-shirts and keychains.

And then there’s the kids. The young ones. The strange youth tribe wearing TCB logo baseball caps instead of 1-800-HOTLINEBLING sweatshirts. I met a lot of them. I photographed them. Wondering if, like me, they were fascinated by the iconography and the way he’s somehow remained forever young and beautiful instead of bloated and addicted to drugs. Or if they were just tagging along with their parents and had no choice.

It amazed me just how many of them had a genuine love in their hearts. How many revered his music, his movies, his style, his face. How many spent their weekends rehearsing their impersonations and learning to play his songs on the guitar. Like so many fans around the world, they still can’t help falling in love with Elvis Presley.
