In ‘Holy Water’, Christopher Nunn takes a quieter look at the periphery of these events in a collection of photographs exploring everyday life, ordinary domestic moments and chance meetings against a backdrop of political turmoil and instability. Themes of escapism, alcohol, friendships and religious iconography permeate the photographs throughout the book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChristopher began working in Ukraine in February 2013 while visiting Kalush, the birthplace of his late grandmother. With this as a geographical starting point, Christopher began to explore other regions, \u003cspan\u003efinding himself by chance in the east of Ukraine at the very start of the ongoing war. As the situation \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eescalated, he became increasingly inspired by his grandmother’s early life as a person displaced by \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003econflict.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver repeated trips, and with a focus on Ukraine’s fragile east, the project has developed into a substantial, nuanced body of work. Without attempting to make a straight document or description of Ukraine’s current situation, Christopher’s work is a personal journey, shaped by the people he has met and driven by curiosity and a desire to better understand the human condition and psyche of this epoch.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘Holy Water’ is part of an on going project. The photographs collected here are fragments of a much larger picture, one that is constantly changing and evolving. Edmund Clark looks at the experience of the vast majority of military personnel and contractors who have serviced Enduring Freedom without ever engaging the enemy. He distils their war down to a concise series of photographs of the two views they have of Afghanistan: what they see of the country over the walls or through the wire of their bases, and what they see of representations within these enclaves that they never leave.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt Bagram Airfield, the biggest American base in Afghanistan and home to 40,000, the view outside is dominated by the mountains of the Hindu Kush. Clark says: ‘Their location on the wall of a dining facility on America’s main base is significant. How many tens of thousands of pairs of western eyes have registered the pastoral peace of these mountainscapes? Has anyone considered what they say of the country they are playing a part in occupying?’\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWars of resistance are characterised by technologically-advanced powers in fortified enclaves fighting far less sophisticated but fluid insurgents hidden in the landscape, sapping the occupiers’ resources and will.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e‘The Mountains of Majeed’ vividly illustrates this endgame to the war in Afghanistan. Two sides divided by concrete walls and a gulf in technology and understanding. At Bagram the local insurgents still send rudimentary rockets into the concrete and gravel of the world’s busiest military airfield.
